In this time of the year, Plum trees are blossoming with the fragrance spreading far away in the campus of Changzhou Campus of Hohai University. Meanwhile, Professor Ji Lingmei just finished what she has been doing for the past year – recording the 232 plant species in the campus via her WeChat’s Moments. The moments she shared include plant knowledge, plant culture, and personal experience.
To ensure the accuracy of the plant information, Ji Lingmei often needed to check the information from various sources to find out the subtle differences between the plant samples as well as to correct some of the misconceptions. During the collection process, she also found that many of the plants on campus had special meanings to them. “The poplars next to the Water Plaza, for example, and the holly and pines and cypresses by the fence are not noticeable, but they were planted by teachers in the early days of the campus, and they are very meaningful.”
From the spring of 2018, Ji Lingmei has used the lunch break to post a piece of Moments on each working day. A total of 232 plants have been recorded by the end of the year. She said that she was "not expecting" this many species. The richness of the plants on campus has far exceeded her expectations. “I named this series ‘Plants of Hohai’ because I wanted to let you know that our university is not only a ‘book house', but also a real garden with hundreds of plant species. I hope you all love the university, starting from the love of each tree and each grass here.”
