The city of Nanjing has vigorously promoted the construction of green trails to connect the city's natural attractions and places of historic and cultural prominence, create a low-carbon and healthy green life and injects new vitality into the city’s economic development.
Nanjing is the only city in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River whose development spans both banks of the river. In 2013, Nanjing launched the construction of a 60-kilometer-long riverside scenery belt that is intended to be an attraction for the local people to relax and exercise.
Nanjing now boasts 863 kilometers of green trails, forming a relatively independent structure in the southern and northern banks of the Yangtze and connecting the scenery belts and scenic spots.
Visitors can feel the vicissitudes of history when walking along the green trail around the Ming Dynasty City Wall. They are also able to walk on the green trails of the Purple Mountain to get relaxed in the forest. Rest areas are installed along the green trails to ensure that the visitors can take a rest from time to time.
The construction of green trails has also injected a strong impetus to rural revitalization.
The Huanglongxian Green Trail has gathered top quality tourism resources and attracted hosts of visitors by connecting most of the villages in the western area of Jiangning district, Nanjing, and enabling the villagers to launch agritainment farms and bed-and-breakfasts.
Nanjing has planned to construct 299 kilometers of green trails this year in a bid to boost the construction of a green trail system that integrates various functions such as eco-environment, fitness, leisure and recreation.
