People in east China’s Jiangsu province held a variety of activities to mourn the revolutionary martyrs ahead of the Qingming Festival.

The provincial department of public security launched a memorial ceremony at the Yuhuatai Martyrs Cemetery to mourn the police officers who sacrificed their lives for safeguarding the motherland and protecting the life and property of the people. 517 police officers in Jiangsu died on duty in the past decades since the founding of New China. 19 officers died on duty last year.

The Nanjing Municipal Department of Public Security and the Provincial Foundation For Justice And Courage hosted a memorial service in honor of Zhou Guangyu, Xue Aiping and Yu Baolin. Since 1900s, authorities in Nanjing have awarded and commended more than 1600 civilian heroes for their bravery acts.

People in Huai’an city gathered in front of the monument to the 82 martyrs in Liulaozhuang Martyrs’ Mausoleum to pay homage to the heroes.

Tomb Sweeping Day or Qingming - which falls on April 4 this year - is a national festival stretching back more than 2,500 years for people to honor and remember their deceased loved-ones at cemeteries and memorials. It is not just a day to honor those who have passed away, but also a time to embrace life at the beginning of spring.
