East China’s Jiangsu province has intensified its efforts to improve water quality by means of policy support, technological backup and law enforcement.
Focusing on improving the core of water quality, in recent years, the provincial government has formulated three basic programs of ecological environment monitoring and control system, infrastructure and standard system, while more than 140 water control plans and tackling plans have been prepared at the provincial, city and county levels.
At present, the province has built a relatively composite sky-land-water integrated water environment monitoring and control network. 641 water quality automatic monitoring stations cover all important segments of rivers and lakes across the province, ranking first in the country.
Jiangsu also takes the lead in the country in the construction of online monitoring platforms. The 807 national water pollution monitoring platforms in the province have all been connected to the online monitoring platforms that will be alerted once the data indicate abnormality.
In terms of policy support, Jiangsu has always promoted the water environment regional compensation and ecological environmental damage compensation system.
Through concerted efforts, Jiangsu has continuously improved its water quality in recent years. 79.8% of the water segments placed under the national monitoring were rated class III in the January-May period, up 20.2 percentage points year on year.
