The Dafeng Milu Deer Nature Reserve has recorded its deer population at 5016, reaching a record high, thanks to the improvement of the ecological environment.

The Dafeng Milu Deer National Nature Reserve has a total of 5,016 milu deer to come up with world records, namely the world's largest protected area for milu deer, the world's largest wild population of milu deer and the world's largest milu deer gene bank. It has become a successful example of China's rescue of endangered species in the world.

The deer reserve park is a part of the Yancheng National Nature Reserve, which is a conservation area for endangered bird species, including the red crowned crane, insects, fish and animal species. It has also become the world’s largest gene pool for milu deer.

Milu, as is called in Chinese, is also known as Pere David's deer. It is a species endemic to China, but overhunting and loss of habitat led to its near extinction in the early 20th Century. In 1986, the British government gifted 39 milu deer to Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve in east China's Jiangsu Province, starting the revival of the population in its homeland.
