The city of Nanjing will make further efforts to promote garbage sorting for a cleaner environment in the wake of the successful experiences in Shanghai.
As one of the earliest cities in the country to promote garbage sorting, Nanjing is still in the stage of advocacy and promotion for garbage sorting at in the main urban area.
According to current garbage sorting standards in Nanjing, domestic garbage must be classified into at least three categories: recyclable garbage, hazardous waste, and other garbage. Among them, the recyclable garbage is of high added value, and the hazardous waste includes battery, lamp and some others while the third category refers to all the other garbage except the above two categories.
In the model communities of garbage sorting, kitchen wastes are sorted to treat the leftovers.
At present, the recyclable garbage in Nanjing is recycled, the hazardous waste is treated in a harmless manner, and other garbage is incinerated.
Nanjing will put into operation its first kitchen waste treatment facility in July in the Jiangbei New Area. The city is yet to improve its kitchen waste treatment ability to match the amount of kitchen wastes produced. The time frame will need three to five years when mandatory garbage sorting can be enacted.
Shanghai's municipal legislature adopted a set of regulations last December on household garbage sorting and recycling. The legislations came into force on July 1.
The regulations also specify the legal responsibilities of individuals and units concerned, who shall take the responsibilities of sorting garbage according to the categories of recyclable, hazardous, wet, and dry waste.
More than 600 notices for rectification were issued to individuals, companies as well as institutions on the first day.
The city also published a name list of 20 social supervisors of household garbage management on the same day, who will randomly check the sorting of garbage in residential communities, hospitals and schools, as well as the transportation of garbage in the 16 districts of Shanghai. More social supervisors will be recruited in the future.
