Shuyang County in northern Jiangsu has a large low-income population. In recent years, the Shuyang County government has relied on nursery stock to effectively help low-income people shake off poverty and build up their fortune.
At a seedling base in Qianji Town, Shuyang County, more than 30 workers are transplanting seedlings in the greenhouse. Ge Hongmei, a farmer in Xiaozuo Village, could barely make both ends meet in the past years. She could not do heavy work because of the injury in the waist. The family of five had to rely on her husband’s job to maintain basic livelihood. In July last year, Ge was hired by the nursery stock to do odd job so as to earn a living.
170 of the 249 hectares of crop fields in Ge’s village have been transferred to contracting for tree seedling cultivation. Ge and her fellow villagers have been able to increase their income.
Xiaozuo Village has been able to shake off poverty and become a model in targeted poverty alleviation.
Many villagers have started up their businesses to make inroads into e-commerce.
Hu Xingxing, a young man building up his fortune through e-commerce, was seen teaching entrepreneurial experiences to more than 20 local young people.
Hu Xingxing was also from a low-income household. From 2015, he started his online business by selling the flowers and trees. Through several years of development, he is now managing a number of online stores, with annual sales exceeding 2 million yuan.
Hu Xingxing is not alone when it comes to getting rich through targeted poverty alleviation. Through the paired industrial assistance program, technical assistance, policy assistance and other means, Shuyang has carved out a wealth-building road by relying on nursery stock and online sales.
In the meantime, authorities in Shuyang have made innovative efforts to grant small credit loan to e-commerce dealers. 325 million yuan of small credit loan was granted last year to help more than 8000 low-income people to increase their income.
Through the joint efforts of all the parties concerned, 145000 of 240000 low-income people in Shuyang have shaken off poverty and 45 impoverished villages have built up their fortune.
