The Wufeng Mountain Yangtze River Bridge in Zhenjiang City came a step closer to becoming China’s first suspension bridge serving both high-speed rail and expressway traffic on November 15 with a breakthrough in the erection of steel truss girders.

Thirty-one of 37 girders had been erected over the bridge’s middle span as of that date, and work on eight others on the side pan was completed on April 1.

A total of 53 steel truss girders will be put in place to support the two levels of the 1,092-meter suspension bridge. The upper level will be an eight-lane expressway while the lower will be used as a railway for high-speed trains.

According to Chen Ming, executive deputy manager of the project department of China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, the construction focus will now shift to connection of the erected truss girders and other matters. The former process will take about 20 days to be finished.

To lift the girders, four cable-carrying cranes with a rated lifting capacity of 900 tons are working in full swing at the hands of skilled workers. More than 40,000 tons of steel truss girders have been lifted since September 24 when that part of construction work began.

The Wufeng Mountain Yangtze River Bridge will become the heaviest load-bearing bridge in China when it is completed, according to a project leader.
