Consumers in east China’s Jiangsu province have the strongest demand for large supermarkets and shopping malls, while cross-border shopping and fresh food retail have become new consumption growth points, according to a report released Wednesday by the Provincial Consumer Rights Protection Committee。
The report shows that the three areas with the highest consumer spending ratios are food and clothing, housing and consumption, and information consumption. Food and clothing account for nearly 50% of income, indicating that Jiangsu’s consumers are spending to meet basic living needs, and there is still much room for quality consumption.
Offline and online shopping are equally divided. Online spending accounts for 45.1% of the average daily spending. Consumers make online purchase of clothing, shoes and hats, food and beverage delivery, daily necessities and fresh food.
The strongest demand with the consumers is supermarket chains, shopping malls, and catering establishments. Consumers in Central and Northern Jiangsu have particularly strong demand for such places. Urban and rural residents have relatively less demand for cultural places.
In the past year, nearly 60% of consumers had cross-border shopping experiences, with cosmetics, digital appliances, mother and baby products on the list of main types of cross-border purchases.
The amount of cross-border shopping by consumers has already accounted for 20.8% of daily consumption, which shows that there is much room for improvement in the quality and service of domestic consumption.
