East China’s Jiangsu province will step up its resolution and effort to press on with the fight against poverty while containing the novel coronavirus outbreak, according to a poverty alleviation meeting held Thursday by the provincial office for poverty alleviation.
Ren Zhenhe, deputy secretary of the CPC Jiangsu provincial committee, said at the meeting that efforts are required to ensure that poverty alleviation goals are met on time and a moderately prosperous society is built.
Measures will be taken to complete poverty relief tasks in an all-around way, and to ensure that all the remaining poverty-stricken counties and population are lifted out of poverty, according to Ren.
The deputy secretary of the provincial party committee also urged efforts to build a monitoring and assisting mechanism, with preemptive measures taken to prevent people from falling into or back into poverty.
Solid work is required to provide follow-up support for poverty alleviation efforts through industries, employment and the planned relocation of poor individuals, while ensuring drinking water safety and quality, he noted.
Amid efforts to minimize the impact of the epidemic, rural revitalization and poverty reduction should be promoted, Ren added.
He also urged Jiangsu to explore the establishment of a long-term mechanism to resolve relative poverty, and to explore ways and provide experience for the nation's poverty reduction campaign.
Ren Zhenhe noted that all localities and departments must maintain political soberness and tenacity in work and resolutely win the all-out victory in the battle against poverty.
Last Friday, at a symposium on securing a decisive victory in poverty alleviation, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed overcoming the impact of the novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19 to clinch a complete victory in the fight against poverty.
Xi stressed that lifting all rural residents living below the current poverty line out of poverty by 2020 is a solemn promise made by the CPC Central Committee, and it must be fulfilled on time.
He called for unremitting efforts on poverty alleviation, saying it is a tough battle that greater importance must be attached to in the final push.
Xi urged Party committees and governments at all levels to advance the fight against poverty in greater determination and intensity, overcome the impact of the COVID-19 to clinch a complete victory in eradicating poverty and accomplish the great cause that is of tremendous importance both for the Chinese nation and humanity.
