Multiple scenic spots in Suzhou open to public for free

Good news! North Temple Pagoda (or Beisita, 北寺塔), Fengqiao Scenic Area (or Maple Bridge, 枫桥风景名胜区) and Five Persons’ Tombs (五人墓) have canceled their admissions and are open to the public for free.

North Temple Pagoda

Built by the Kingdom of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period (A.D. 220-280), North Temple Pagoda is known as the “oldest tower to the south of the Yangtze River”. Located on Renmin Road, the time-honored pagoda is large in scale and is an important symbol of Suzhou.

As the North Temple Pagoda dominates the old town of Suzhou, you can easily catch a sight of the towering pagoda from different places in the old town. Besides, in the famous Humble Administrator’s Garden, you can also admire how the distant pagoda was skillfully borrowed by ancient builders to become part of the sceneries inside the garden.

Notice: Visitors no longer need to pay the admission fee (RMB15 yuan/person) to the scenic spot, but they still need to pay the admission fee to the pagoda (RMB10 yuan/person).

Fengqiao Scenic Area

Famous poet Zhang Ji’s Night Mooring at Maple Bridge (枫桥夜泊) has made Fengqiao (Maple Bridge) known to all. The scenic area includes Hanshan Temple(寒山寺), Fengqiao Bridge (枫桥) in Fengqiao Ancient Town (枫桥古镇), Tie Ling Pass(铁铃古关), Jiangfeng Ancient Bridge(江枫古桥), and an ancient canal(古运河). Standing on the Fengqiao Bridge, tourists can get a panoramic view of Suzhou and the beauty of its landscape.

Five Persons’ Tombs

The five righteous persons who died for the anti-Wei Zhongxian (魏忠贤) struggle in the Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644) were buried here. They are Yan Peiwei (颜佩韦), Yang Nianru (杨念如), Zhou Wenyuan (周文元), Shen Yang (沈扬) and Ma Jie (马杰). Five Person’s Tombs were listed as a provincial-level protection site of Jiangsu Province in 1956.
