East China’s Jiangsu province is accelerating the construction of 546 high-standard farmland projects to ensure that they are put into use in the summer so as to consolidate and improve the province’s food security capabilities in line with the instructions set forth in the government work report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at this year’s annual legislative session.
Liuzhuang Village in Xuzhou City adopted a new technology of one-step molding in the canal construction process, which greatly saved engineering time and labor costs. This farmland water conservancy project resumed work on the second day of the Lunar New Year, in order to ensure that the high-standard farmland project can be put into use during the summer planting season.

"Molding and pouring are formed at one time so as to save energy during water use, which will greatly shorten the irrigation period, and ensure the smooth progress of rice transplanting," said Cai Kejun, Project Manager, Liuzhuang Village.
"In the past, it took us about half a month to irrigate more than 500 mu of land. This new type of water conservancy project saves the time spent on irrigation by a half and is expected to increase the grain yield by 100 kg," Ren Dongmei, Rice Grower in Peixian County.
According to preliminary calculations, compared with ordinary farmland, the rent of high-standard farmland will increase by more than 100 yuan per mu, the grain output will increase by about 50 kg per mu, and the average operating cost per mu will be reduced by about 150 yuan.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Jiangsu built 20.7 million mu of high-standard farmland.
Jiangsu constitutes 1.1% of the country's land but produces about 5.6% of the country's grain, making an important contribution to ensuring national food security.
Jiangsu is currently constructing 546 high-standard farmland projects with a total of 3.6 million mu, which are expected to be put into use at the end of May when rice seedling is transplanted.

"Following the autumn harvest, Jiangsu will start construction of 3.9 million mu of high-standard farmland and 230 thousand mu of high-efficiency water-saving irrigation projects. We will also actively carry out high-standard ecological farmland construction pilot projects, explore the implementation of ecological transformation of farmland irrigation and drainage systems and the recycling of farmland tail water, promote the improvement of farmland ecological environment, and the development of green farmland," said Wang Zhao, Director, Farmland Construction Division, Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
