East China’s Jiangsu province has revved up the construction of major investment projects and ensured their smooth progress through every possible effort so as to achieve the social and economic development targets set forth in this year’s government work report.

  

On Saturday, the Changzhou-Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge project saw the completion of the bottom-sealing pouring of the steel caisson of the main tower.

On the same day, the Taihu Lake Tunnel project saw the tunnel bottom plate connected.

The completion of the steel caisson bottom-sealing pouring of the main tower marks the completion of the underwater construction of the caisson foundation of the bridge, and the imminent start of the construction of the water cap and tower.

The steel caisson of the bridge’s sixth pier is a new stepped caisson foundation for weight reduction and erosion reduction. Measuring 95 meters long, 57.8 meters wide, and 64 meters high, it is equivalent to 13 standard basketball courts.

The thickness of the back cover of the caisson is 11.5 meters, which is equivalent to the height of a 4-story building. The concrete volume of the back cover is about 49 thousand cubic meters, which is close to the area of 20 standard swimming pools.

Such a large amount of underwater concrete pouring construction is unprecedented in the history of bridge building on the Yangtze River.

More than 300 monitoring components are installed inside the caisson, and smart sensors are used to automatically collect the attitude and structural force data of the caisson which are display on the cloud-based monitoring platform.

The Taihu Lake Tunnel of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Southern Expressway is the longest underwater expressway tunnel under construction in China.

The connection of the bottom plate on Saturday has laid the foundation for the Changzhou-Wuxi section to be completed within this year.


The weir construction method was adopted to construct the 10.79-kilometer-long Taihu Lake Tunnel by moving from the shore to the middle of the lake section by section.

The construction of the tunnel bottom plate is an important part of the construction of the main structure of the Taihu Tunnel. During the pouring process, the constructors overcame the difficulty of pouring large-volume concrete to ensure that the tunnel bottom plate was poured into shape at one time.


The 43.9-kilometer-long Changzhou-Wuxi section of the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Southern Expressway starts from Qianhuang Town, Wujin District of Changzhou and ends at Nanquan Town of Wuxi.

The new expressway between Shanghai and Nanjing is of great significance for promoting the development of cities along the route and accelerating the integration of the Yangtze River Delta.
