Leaders from the four provincial-level regions in the Yangtze River Delta joined with the experts in the discussion of the new development pattern and higher quality development on the delta region at a high-level forum on the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta held Thursday in Wuxi city, Jiangsu province.

Li Qiang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, pointed out that the Party Central Committee and the State Council have made strategic arrangements to build a new development pattern, requiring the Yangtze River Delta to take the lead in forming a new development pattern, giving the Yangtze River Delta a new strategic connotation and historical mission for its integrated development.

He said the Yangtze River Delta region must take better infinitives, give full play to the overall advantages, promote domestic and international economic circulations, and strive to make the Yangtze River Delta a powerful engine that stimulates China's economic cycle.

Li Qiang hoped that the Yangtze River Delta will build a complete industrial chain, strengthen the division of labor, promote a world-class industrial cluster with international competitiveness, build an independent, controllable, safe and efficient industrial chain supply chain that serves the country, and take the lead in establishing a new higher-level open economic system, create new advantages in international cooperation and competition, and jointly promote the Yangtze River Delta to write a new chapter in higher-quality integrated development.

Lou Qinjian, Secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, said that the Yangtze River Delta is an important engine of the domestic economic cycle and an important link that integrates into the international cycle. Therefore, it is necessary to build a new development pattern, take the lead in the practice and exploration of the modernization drive in the country, work together to build a market-oriented community, build an integrated demonstration zone for rural revitalization, strengthen cooperation in carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and work together to be at the forefront of modernization.

Yuan Jiajun, Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee, said that Zhejiang will take the lead in promoting high-quality development, building a modernized Hangzhou Bay, accelerating the development of oceans and mountains into new growth poles, taking the lead in promoting technological self-reliance, building a world-class industrial cluster and the optimal ecology of science and technology, and fully promoting digital reforms, deepening the joint development of free trade zones, building a world-class strong port, a global logistics hub, exploring new mechanisms for green development, and building a new mechanism for coordinated development of urban and rural areas.

Li Jinbin, secretary of the Anhui Provincial Party Committee, said that Anhui will strengthen original innovation in the service construction of new development pattern, develop a green and low-carbon economy, further realize innovation and self-reliance, promote innovation-driven development, and jointly create high-quality development.

The Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council, released in December 2019 a new development plan to build the Yangtze River Delta into an economic powerhouse that will add to the country's high-quality development and create a strong and active economic growth nucleus and a gateway for further opening up the economy.

Under the new plan, substantial progress will be made in boosting the integrated development of the delta region by 2025, including fostering a number of world-class industrial clusters and becoming a key national innovation hub. By 2035, the area would become the most influential and dynamic growth pole of the economy.

The delta region encompasses Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui, covering around 358,000 square kilometers and generating about one-quarter of the country's GDP.

Under the new plan, Shanghai can better play up its functions in international economy, finance, trade, shipping and scientific innovation, as well as forge a powerful brand in services, manufacturing, shopping and culture.

As the delta region develops, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui are set to become an internationally competitive, advanced manufacturing base, a leading player in the digital economy and an important source of innovation and emerging industries, according to the plan.
