China is standing out in artificial intelligence computing and the digital transformation of manufacturing in the fierce competition of the global digital economy, according to the 2021-2022 Global Computing Index Evaluation Report released recently by Tsinghua University.

The ability to calculate and process various data, also known as computing power, is an important indicator for measuring the development of the digital economy.

The "Global Computing Power Index Evaluation Report" is jointly compiled by Tsinghua University and the International Data Corporation IDC and other institutions with a view to conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the computing power, computing efficiency, application level and infrastructure of 15 major economies around the world.

The data shows that in the past year, all countries have improved their computing power scores, and China has shown the largest increase, entering the echelon of the global leaders with a total score of 70 points.

The report shows that for the first time, the manufacturing industry has entered the top three industries in terms of computing power in the world, along with the Internet industry and the financial industry that show the fastest growth in computing power investment.

In 2021, the investment in information technology by China's manufacturing industry accounted for about 15% of the global total, and it is expected to reach 20% by 2025.

In terms of computing power, all countries are accelerating the deployment of artificial intelligence computing power, and the proportion of artificial intelligence computing power in total computing power expenditure in 15 countries has increased from 9% in 2016 to 12%.

Fifteen countries reported an increase in AI computing power by 12%, up from 9% in 2016.

China has approved a project involving the construction of eight national computing hubs and plans to build 10 national-data center clusters, indicating that its strategy to channel more computing resources from the country's eastern regions to its less developed yet resource-rich western regions is in full swing.
