East China's Jiangsu province has reported a bumper harvest of summer grains with increasing quantity and rising quality, according to the Provincial Food and Strategic Reserves Bureau.

Zhangjiagang Shazhou Center Grain Depot has installed and debugged online pest monitoring sensors. This new device can monitor the pests on the surface of the grain piles, and can monitor the pests inside the grain piles in real time.

The 6-meter-high grain pile can be arranged with two layers, and a monitoring point can be arranged every 3-5 meters.

Taking into account the characteristics that pests like to drill, the new equipment lures pests to drill by burying utensils full of small holes.

In addition to precise insect control, grain depots across the province have also explored a number of black technologies for green grain storage.

The Xuzhou grain depot directly under the central grain reserve put into use the upgraded version of nitrogen modified atmosphere grain storage equipment.

The new process can separate nitrogen and other gases in the air through the nitrogen generator, and then fill the granary with high-concentration nitrogen to replace and reduce the oxygen concentration in the granary, thereby killing the stored grain pests and inhibiting the growth of microorganisms.

"Compared with the traditional chemical fumigation and insecticide, the new process avoids the residue of the chemical in the grain and the pollution of the chemical to the environment and can save more than 100,000 yuan in the cost of chemical agents every year, thus realizing the goal of scientific and technological grain storage, green grain storage and loss reduction," said Chen Shuo, Custodian of the shallow round warehouse of the Central Grain Reserve Xuzhou Direct Storage Co., Ltd.

The latest statistics show that as of now, the province has put 16.941 billion catties of wheat into storage, a year-on-year increase of 392 million catties. Over 80% of summer grains have been purchased.

This year's wheat quality has improved significantly compared with last year, with the proportion of third-grade and above samples reaching 99%, up 6% year-on-year, said the Provincial Food and Strategic Reserves Bureau. First-class sample wheat accounted for 69.7%, up 28.2% year-on-year. The average purchase price of wheat is around 1.5 yuan per catty.
