Photo taken on the morning of Aug. 17 shows a farmer on Sanshan Island of Dongshan Town, picking Mayan jujubes.
Mayan jujube, or horse-eye jujube, is a famous specialty on Sanshan Island and it is so named because its fruit shape looks like a horse’s eye. It enters the harvest season in late August or early September. And the fruit is rich in vitamins and amino acids.
Currently, there are 692 jujube trees on the island that are more than a century old. This year’s jujube yield is likely to be about 120 tons, with larger and sweeter fruits than in previous years because of the dry weather in summer. The 8th Sanshan Island Mayan
Jujube Cultural Tourism Festival is going to be held from August 20 to 31 to attract tourists. During this period, visitors to the island can get a 20% discount on individual tickets and a 30% discount on group tickets.
