East China’s Jiangsu province has made headway in river pollution control by cleaning up polluted rivers and lakes across the province. Let’s take a close look.
Jinchuan River is a main stream leading to the Yangtze River in Gulou District of Nanjing City. Originating from Gulou Hill and the northern foot of Qingliang Hill, it flows downstream into the Yangtze River through the Baota Bridge.
At the Baota Bridge section of Jinchuan River, the water is clear with rippling blue waves. Canna flowers on both banks are in full bloom, and weeping willows are blowing in the wind. A water friendly platform is also laid on the shore, where many citizens take a walk for leisure and entertainment.
Gao Xueqin, Citizen of Nanjing
In the past, there was a smell of sewage here, and the environment was very poor. There was no road here. After the environmental renovation, the environment here is particularly good.We often have activities here, and the scenery is very beautiful.
In 2015, Nanjing issued the Implementation Plan for the Treatment of Polluted Water Bodies, opening the curtain for the systematic treatment of polluted water bodies throughout the city.
Taking Jinchuan River as an example, through the implementation of comprehensive measures such as source control and sewage interception, river dredging, drainage and water supplement, and ecological restoration, achieving the goal of "three-step leap" from black odor to comprehensive black elimination and then to comprehensive degradation.
Liu Yongbin, Deputy Chief of Water Environment Construction Section of Nanjing Gulou District Water Affairs Bureau
By the end of 2022, we will have basically eliminated the inferior Class V water bodies in the Jinchuan River basin. For example, the section of Baota Bridge is the section leading to the Yangtze River.According to the current requirements,it is required to meet the Class III water standard, and the current water quality fully meets this standard.
Nanjing Water Conservancy Department implemented the provincial requirements and launched the Jinchuan River Happy Lake Project by building the section of the Baota Bridge of the Outer Jinchuan River entering the river, the ecological river lake demonstration section of the Xiaotaoyuan section of the northwest moat, and a number of riverside hydrophilic platforms, giving rise to the beautiful picture of "clean water, green banks, smooth river, and beautiful scenery".
Changzhou invested 500 million yuan to dismantle illegal buildings on both sides of Longyou River and implement rainwater and sewage diversion, comprehensively renovating and improving the living environment of citizens.
Baimi Town, Jiangyan District of Taizhou City dredged the Baiguan River, which solved the problem of river slope collapse and riverbed siltation, making it shady with green trees and beautiful flowers.
Yao Chuanghong, Deputy Chief of Management Section of Nanjing Gulou District Water Affairs Bureau
We hope to make more residents feel the beauty of Jinchuan River through the improvement of riverside hydrophilic landscape.
You Yuxin, Villager in Baimi Town, Jiangyan District, Taizhou City
Now the sky is bluer, the water is clearer, the earth is greener, and we really feel what is the sense of security, sense of gain, and sense of happiness.
The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China made it clear that we should promote the harmonious coexistence of human beings and nature, continue with the fight against pollution, and basically eliminate the polluted water bodies in cities.
