East China’s Jiangsu province is expecting a bumper grain harvest. Since the beginning of this year, Jiangsu has strengthened its responsibility for food security, accelerated the construction of high standard farmland, constantly strengthened technical measures for agricultural disaster prevention and mitigation, and made every effort to fight against high temperatures, drought and typhoons.
Baochang Village of Rudong County is welcoming a bumper rice harvest. After a rare summer heat, Xu Bing, a local farmer, spoke highly of the new high standard farmland this year.
Compared with the scattered small fields in the past, after land leveling, the fields are concentrated and connected, and the supporting water conservancy facilities ensure that the farmland can be irrigated under drought and drained under waterlogging.
The comprehensive benefits of high standard farmland are also reflected in increasing the planting area, improving the village collective income and some other aspects.
The 3.9 million mu of new high standard farmland projects completed in 2021 have been put into use before summer planting this year. In addition to ensuring the income from drought and waterlogging, the construction of high standard farmland has also facilitated the promotion of high-quality and efficient agricultural machinery and Internet of Things equipment, and reduced the field operation cost.
Statistics show that the province's total summer grain output this year reached 28.01 billion catties, an increase of 390 million jin year on year, accounting for 13.6% of the country's total output.
According to incomplete statistics, the province’s grain-sown area is expected to reach 81.632 million mu this year, an increase of 219 thousand mu year-on-year. The total output is expected to reach a new high by exceeding 75 billion catties, signaling a bumper grain harvest.
