The annual edition of the Global Canal Rowing Action with the theme of "Global Canal Crossing, Creating a Zero Carbon Future Together" ended on the bank of Yangzhou Ancient Canal on Sunday morning. Yangzhou, as the origin city of the Grand Canal, joined hands on the same day with 18 cities around the world, such as Cairo of Egypt, to promote the canal culture and the concept of low-carbon environmental protection for sustainable development.
The "Canal Deep Diving Global Canal Rowing Crossing Action" was jointly launched by the World Canal Historical and Cultural Cities Cooperation Organization and the Shenzhen-based International Exchange and Cooperation Foundation.
Starting from Yangzhou in September 2021, the Global Canal Rowing Action traveled 1800 kilometers in 19 cities along the Grand Canal of China and arrived in Britain during the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference.
Reaching out to 123 canal cities in 9 countries on five continents, the Global Canal Rowing Action has attracted more than 2000 rowing enthusiasts around the world, promoted the concept of "zero carbon emission, zero waste, and water protection", and strengthened the exchanges and cooperation among cities along the canal.
In response to the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Sharm el Sheikh of Egypt, Yangzhou joined hands with 18 cities, including Cairo, to carry out rowing crossing around the earth according to different time zones.
Twenty-four rowers from six rowing teams, including Yangzhou Vanke and the Ecological Science and Technology New City, completed a 12 km rowing crossing in the ancient canal, bringing the "canal deep diving" rowing crossing activity to a successful end.
The global canal rowing crossing action is supported by international organizations including the International Inland Waterway Organization, the World Rowing Federation and the World Natural Fund.
The second leg of the action, which is being prepared, will end in 2023 during the 28th UN Climate Conference in Dubai with a view to promoting more exchanges and cooperation between China and foreign countries.
