The 30th anniversary seminar of the "1992 Consensus" was held in Nanjing on Thursday by Taiwan Compatriots Friendship Association under the joint guidance of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Jiangsu Province and the Taiwan Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipality.
Gao Kong Lian, Chairman of the Presidium of the Central Review Committee Meeting of the Chinese Kuomintang, Deng Daixian, Deputy Director of the Mainland Affairs Department of the Chinese Kuomintang and Secretary General of the Cross Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association were invited to exchange their views through video link with experts and scholars on the Chinese mainland on the issues of upholding the 1992 Consensus and the joint efforts for national rejuvenation.
The launching ceremony of this event kicked off a series of activities that followed afterwards. Professor Liu Xiangping, the director of the Taiwan Institute of Nanjing University, and Chi-yin Wong, the host of Taiwan's famous political commentaries, gave special lectures on the content related to Taiwan in the report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the theme of 30 years of "the 1992 Consensus".
"The 1992 Consensus is the most important anchor for the relations between both sides of the Straits and it clearly positions that both sides belong to our motherlandand pursue peaceful reunification.Taiwan people must truly understand the 1992 Consensus and regain the glory and pride of being Chinese," Chi-yin Wong, Senior political critic and writer in Taiwan said.
In the afternoon, participants visited the Inspiration Society Museum and the "Theme Exhibition of Dr.Sun Yat-sen and the CPC" in Zhongshan Academy to review the history of national rejuvenation.
"The greatest meaning is to understand and restore the history and to understand the deeper meaning of the 1992 Consensus. It was because of the 1992 Consensus that there were economic and trade exchanges and direct flights between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait," Huang Liying, Executive deputy director, Nanjing Taiwan Compatriots Friendship Association said.
"Civil society organizations play an important role in promoting the cross-strait relations. The root of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is at the grassroots level and the driving force is among the people,"Shen Wenlong, Deputy director, Nanjing Taiwan Compatriots Friendship Association said.
This event was held to review and explain the historical latitude and significance of the "1992 Consensus", and unite compatriots on both sides of the Straits to work together to promote the peaceful reunification of the motherland.
