In Dachang Village, Jieshou Town, Gaoyou City, a couple of oriental white storks built their nests on the high-voltage iron tower. In January, the couple began to hatch their "baby". Let’s take a close look.
It is expected that five "babies" will be born in the "air family" around the middle of March.
"There are 8 nests of oriental white storks, an increase of one over last year. Now there are about 54 nests of oriental white storks in the city and 35 to 36 nests are hatching young birds," said Gu Hui, Staff Member of Gaoyou Nature Reserve Management Center.
According to the preliminary statistics of the local wildlife protection department, about 500 oriental white storks were reported in Gaoyou in 2022. More than 30 pairs of them have become resident birds by settling down in the area.
By mid-March, about 100 oriental white storks in Gaoyou will return to their nests and fly to the north, and the survival rate of hatched chicks will also be greatly improved.
"Farmers have enhanced their awareness of bird protection. The farmers will call the wildlife rescue telephone in time once they find the injured oriental white stork," Gu Hui said.
"We will build an exhibition hall which is mainly divided into three areas, including the science popularization exhibition hall and the outdoor classroom of life diversity. Behind the exhibition hall is the wildlife protection station," said Xu Renyuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Jieshou Town, Gaoyou City.
The local government is making further improvement of the environment by promoting the construction of wetland park so as to better protect the Oriental white stork.
