East China’s Jiangsu province has ushered in the summer harvest of aquatic products in the late summer season. Let’s take a close look.
It is the season when the water chestnut is maturing. At the Lingjiao Base in Fushe Village, Baidian Town, Hai'an County, harvesters were working in groups of two and rowing boats to pick the water chestnuts hidden under the leaves.
The farm has integrated water chestnut cultivation and sightseeing tourism so as to have attracted tourists from all over the world to experience and enjoy the charm of the water town.
“This year, we are expecting 5000 to 6000 catties in the yield of water chestnuts per mu, an increase of about 2000 catties from last year. The water chestnut will be delivered to customers who have placed orders with us”, Fu Xianfeng, a farmer in Fushe Village, Baidian Town, Hai'an County, said.
In the thousand-mu lotus root pond in Chendun Village, Huangchuan Town, Donghai County, growers were seizing time to pick and dig lotus roots. In order to meet market demand and ensure a good price, the village has planted the early-maturing variety "Snowy Lotus" in a 200-mu lotus pond so as to market the lotus one month in advance and extend the harvesting period to mid-to-late September.
Chendun Village has relied on its abundant water resources to implement the co-cultivation of lotus root and cray fish so as to continuously improve the industrial chain and increase the added value of its aquatic products.
As of now, the village is expected to produce from its 1200-mu lotus root and crayfish pond a yield of approximately 1250 kg of lotus root per mu, and a crayfish yield of around 100 kg to generate estimated output value of over 95 million yuan, carving out a unique path to prosperity.
In recent days, farmers at various aquaculture bases in Songzhuang Town, Ganyu District of Lianyungang have been busy harvesting mature white shrimps that will be shipped to various parts of the country.
South American white shrimp has advantages such as low salt tolerance, fast growth, strong disease resistance, and long survival time in water. Songzhuang Town has relied on its abundant water resources to vigorously develop specialty aquaculture by providing efficient aquaculture and technical support to farmers.
“The yield per mu of land is around 600 kilograms, and this year's yield can fetch a good price, with an estimated annual income of over 500000 yuan”, Fang Ling, a farmer in Xizheng Village, Songzhuang Town, Ganyu District, Lianyungang City, said.
