The city of Nanjing in east China’s Jiangsu province has spared no efforts to effectively improve the capacity of grassroots medical and health services by actively promoting the policy of graded diagnosis and treatment, forming a compact medical consortium between large and small hospitals and promoting the landing of high-quality medical resources at the grassroots level. Let’s take a close look.
Last Friday, Tangshan Sub-district in Nanjing began trial operation of a new community health service center, with medical services fully managed by Nanjing Jiangning Hospital.
“We have dispatched a team of emergency experts to ensure that emergency medical treatment services are provided 24 hours a day at the Tangshan Sub-district Community Health Service Center”, Yang Yang, Director of the Medical Department of Jiangning Hospital in Nanjing, said.
After the upgrade, the community hospital increased the number of beds to 122 and also introduced equipment for examination and treatment such as CT, MRI, gastroenteroscope, and hemodialysis.
Jiangsu is gradually strengthening the construction of medical consortia among hospitals. According to the "Jiangsu Provincial Grassroots Health Regulations" that will be implemented from September 1st, Jiangsu will establish a collaborative relationship between class II and class III public hospitals, township health centers, and community health service centers based on the construction of medical consortia.
Nanjing Meishan Hospital, located in Yuhuatai District, is a class II hospital far from the urban area, making it inconvenient for the local residents to seek medical treatment. Taking pediatric outpatient clinics as an example, one to two doctors can receive over 100 patients per day at most.
On August 16th, the Pediatric Center of Southeast University Zhongda Hospital dispatched experts to Meishan Hospital for consultation. Two-way referrals will also be carried out to facilitate the medical treatment for children in the surrounding areas.
“The medical consortium has enabled the urgent and critical needs of pediatrics to be addressed locally. Patients of difficult diseases can be sent to Zhongda Hospital for emergency treatment after completing relevant examinations, and then return to Meishan Hospital for further treatment”, Li Quan, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing Meishan Hospital, said.
Zhongda Hospital has also settled urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and otolaryngology head and neck surgery sub-centers in Meishan Hospital in a bid to improve medical and health services through various forms such as expert consultation, surgery, technical training, and further education.
