East China’s Jiangsu province has witnessed a bumper autumn harvest filled with the joy of farmers who are busy harvesting various agricultural products.
In the shrimp breeding ponds in Kunsheng Village, Jingjiang County, farmers were busy pulling nets to catch shrimp. As the fishing net slowly tightened, shrimps kept jumping out of the water.
As the shrimp were sorted and packaged, farmer Xu Hua smiled all over his face. In May, he released giant freshwater prawn fry into the breeding ponds. After four months of growth, about 500 kilograms of giant freshwater prawn were produced per mu, bringing a solid harvest year.
The delicious crabs produced from 50000 mu aquaculture ponds in Lianshui County have become popular in the holiday market. Yu Bingxian, an aquaculture farmer, has contracted more than 900 mu of ponds to cultivate crabs. Since the beginning of autumn, he has produced about 5000 kilograms of crabs every day.
Lianshui County has made every effort to promote the green and healthy aquaculture and shrimp and crab mixed culture technology model so as to have promoted the upgrading of the county's aquaculture industry and increased the aquaculture efficiency with an average increase of about 4000 yuan per mu, an average yield of 115 kilograms per mu, and a production value of 860 million yuan.
“Through the promotion of this new model, the proportion of high-quality crabs in our county has increased by more than 20% from before, and the price has also doubled from ordinary crabs, with an average income of over 10000 yuan per mu”, Wang Rui, Director of the Fishery Workstation in Lianshui County, said.
At the wild rice stem base in Linhuai Town, Sihong County, farmers were busy harvesting fresh and ripe wild rice stems. Thanks to its close proximity to the Hongze Lake, good water source, and fertile soil, the wild rice stem produced here is large, plump, and of high quality, which is highly favored by consumers.
The local government is exploring the development of green and efficient agriculture by focusing on the wild rice stem industry in a bid to create a prosperous rural area.
