Jiangsu revs up major energy project construction

East China's Jiangsu province has stepped up the construction of major energy projects and ensured their smooth progress through every possible effort so as to fulfill goals for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

At the Yangkou Port Sunshine Island GCL Huidong Rudong LNG Terminal project site in Rudong County, four blowers continuously inflated for 130 minutes, causing the dome composed of 36 steel plates with a total weight of over 900 tons to smoothly rise to a designated height of 45 meters, signaling the completion of gas jacking operation for the T-2101 storage tank.

The construction principle of tank gas jacking is similar to that of an air pump, and it is one of the most technically challenging and important links in the construction process of LNG storage tanks, therefore requiring the highest safety factor.

Breaking ground in September 2022, the LNG terminal project is a provincial-level major energy infrastructure project scheduled for operation in the first half of 2025.

This LNG project will have an annual loading and unloading capacity of up to 3.5 million tons, equivalent to approximately 4 billion cubic meters of gaseous natural gas, which meet the needs of 20 million households for one year.

"Gas jacking is a very important aspect, announcing the construction of tank capping and shifting to internal construction and installation", Xu Yang, Project Manager of China Huanqiu GCL Huidong Rudong LNG Terminal, said.

The lower reservoir of the State Grid Xinyuan Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Power Station, a provincial-level major project, has completed water storage acceptance. In the meantime, the construction of the anti-seepage structure for the upper reservoir has begun so as to strive for water storage acceptance by the end of March next year.

With the first unit scheduled for operation by the end of 2024, the project has a total installed capacity of 1.35 million kilowatts, a designed annual pumping capacity of 1.8 billion kilowatt hours, and an annual power generation capacity of 1.35 billion kilowatt hours.

"When put into operation, we utilize the excess electricity during the low period, transfer the water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir for storage, and then transfer the water from the upper reservoir to the lower reservoir during the peak period of electricity consumption to generate electricity and alleviate the demand pressure on the entire power grid", said Hong Lei, Hydraulic Management Department of Jiangsu Jurong Pumped Storage Co., Ltd., State Grid Xinyuan.
