East China’s Jiangsu province will bring the roles of academicians into better play in it technological innovation and economic growth. The remark was made Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Provincial Committee, at a symposium held Tuesday in Nanjing.
48 academicians with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering were invited to attend the symposium to give their expert advice on the province’s high quality development. These academicians work with Jiangsu-based universities and institutes.
Lou Qinjian stressedthat the academicians are the country's valuable wealth and have always played a pivotal role in the process of science and technology, industrial development and social progress.
He hoped that the academicians in Jiangsu will help to promote innovation in Jiangsu by contributing more wisdom and strength, and making greater contributions so as to ensure that Jiangsu's scientific and technological innovation ranks in the forefront of the country.
Wang Zeshan, winner of the State Preeminent Science and Technology Award of 2017, was among the academicians present at the symposium.
The academicians spoke highly of the exploration and practice of promoting high-quality development in Jiangsu Province. They remarked that Jiangsu has rich resources for science and education and a solid industrial base with improving environment for encouraging and supporting scientific and technological innovation, which will undoubtedly help the province rank among the best in the country in the new era of innovation and development.
The academicians put forth their opinions on the promotion of Jiangsu's scientific and technological innovation, a scientific and technological powerhouse, high-quality development of the pharmaceutical industry, strategic choice of new energy industry, innovation of the industry-university-research cooperation system, the strengthening of the cultivation of basic research and emerging industries, the enhancement of the enterprises as the main body in the process of innovation, scientific and technological innovation for the treatment of major diseases, the launch of major platforms forthe transformation and upgrading of equipment manufacturing, innovation and development of artificial intelligence industry, and innovation of school-enterprise cooperation.
Lou Qinjian and Governor Wu Zhenglong exchanged their views with the academicians from time to timeand gave clear-cut answers to the proposals made by some academicians.
Lou extended his sincere gratitude to the academicians for their thoughtful, constructive and forward-looking advice and suggestions for promoting the high quality development of Jiangsu.

At present, we are in the process of unleashing an extremely profound scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation with major scientific and technological innovations constantly taking place in many fields, he said, adding that the cross-disciplinary integration and innovation is becoming more and more commonplacewith unprecedentedly profound influences on the production, life and way of thinking of human beings.
Lou Qinjian noted that innovation is of pivotal significance to the country’s future, which calls forgreater attention to basic research and original innovation. As an economic powerhouse endowed with rich science and education resources and backed up by real economy, Jiangsu has a duty-bound responsibility in the construction of the country’s innovation system, making it an obligation for the province to rank at the forefront of the national innovation strategy, he said.
He pointed out that the academicians had given very inspiring and insightful opinions on state-oriented innovation, technological frontier innovation, collaborative innovation across the entire industry chain, problem-oriented innovations for problem-solving, innovation with concentrated strengths, cross-integration innovation, disruptive innovation.
The CPC Jiangsu Provincial Chief hoped that the academicians will help Jiangsu to build an independent and controllable modern industrial system so that Jiangsu will play its due role in the construction of the national innovation system, adding that the province will do a more targeted service for the academicians in all aspects of work and life, and strive to create a better environment for technological innovation.
Wu Zhenglong said that in the face of the new situation, new tasks and new requirements, we must fully implement the new development concept, regard high-quality development as the most distinct orientation of the new era, and regard innovation as the strongest driving force for high-quality development and fully stimulate the vitality of all kinds of talents so as to make the primary resource truly a source of strength for innovation and development.
