The Huaihe River Bridge on the Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou Railway was joined Sunday to connect both sides of the river, speeding up the construction of the high-speed railway in east China.

The trans-Huaihe River Bridge in Shouxian County, Anhui Province is a key control project for the construction of theShangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou Railway.

Stretching 17 kilometers, the main bridge is 452 meters long and the main span is 228 meters, making it the world's No.1 steel high-speed railway bridge at the current speed of 350 kilometers.

In order to ensure the stable and smooth construction of the bridge’s foundation, the pilesof the bridge penetrate to 121 meters under the water surface of the Huaihe River, equivalent to the height of 40 floors.

By using ballastless track technology, the 350-kilometre high-speed train travels will be able to travel across the river in less than five seconds.

The790-kilometer-longShangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou Railway starts from Shangqiu in Henan Province and ends in Hangzhou in the east, traversing Henan, Anhui and Zhejiang and running across the Huaihe River and across the Yangtze River.

It is the second passenger transportation channel in East China after the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway.

The entire rail trackis expected to be opened to traffic in 2020.
