The 2018 Jiangsu Ocean Economic Development Index Report has been released by the Provincial Department of Natural Resources. This is the first time the province has released the Ocean Economic Development Index Report. The report makes comprehensive and quantitative evaluation on the development of the province’s ocean economy from seven categories of indicators that include development level, development effectiveness and development potential, economic scale, economic stability and innovation-driven. The report shows that from 2010 to 2017, Jiangsu reported desirable development of the ocean economy with the ocean economic development index growing 4.2% annually on the average. China announced its first ocean economic development index in November 2016. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the annual growth rate of the China Ocean Economic Development Index was 3.7 percent, suggesting a good overall development of the ocean economy. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period China will establish 10 to 20 demonstration zones to test ocean economy polices. The zones will feature projects that aim to advance innovative development patterns for the ocean economy, coordinate development of ocean industries and protect marine ecosystem.
