The 2018 Nanjing Archaeological Conference took place at the city’s Oriental Metropolitan Museum on January 30, presenting ten projects about archaeology and cultural preservation for academic exchanges and public visit too.
Great Bao’en Temple was an imperial temple built in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The Glazed Pagoda, an important part of the temple, was constructed under the instruction of Emperor Chengzu, whose name was Zhu Li, of the Ming Dynasty. The building was featured in early European illustration of China.
The vacant lot in the southern part of the temple was originally intended to build a car park as well as a museum for Jinling scripture engraving site, 16 meters under the ground. The plan was changed due to new archaeological findings.
Since 2015, archaeologists have excavated 10 house bases, seven wells and two drainage ditches at the site, discovering the central axis of the southern part of the temple as well as the front, main and rear halls of the Lecture Hall.
