The port industry in east China’s Jiangsu province was off to a flying start, as is evidenced by the year-on-year increase of the throughput in the first month of the New Year.
In January, Lianyungang Port exported 5,816 mechanical vehicles, a gain of 4,996 units and an increase of 600% year on year. The export of automobiles totaled 5,039 units, an increase of 4,783 units yearonyear, achieving a record high in single-month mechanical vehicle exports.
Lianyungang Port completed 11 ro-ro voyage operations in January, exceeding the volume of the same period of the previous year, which further promoted the export of mechanical vehicles to Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Europe.
Xugong, Yutong, SAIC, Great Wall, Carter and Jinlong maintained a good export momentum. SAIC maintained a strong momentum of development, exporting 3,399 vehicles to Australia and other places in January.
Efforts were made to strengthen the function of the port hub, improve the trunk route network, promote the deep integration of port, shipping and transport, and improve the service level of opening to the outside world. In January, the province's ports above designated scale registered 210 million tons of throughput, 44.68 million tons of foreign trade throughput and1.457 million TEUs of container throughput, increasing by 13%, 14.3% and 3.3%.
In 2019, Jiangsu will invest 12.48 billion yuan on the improvement of port infrastructures and 790 million yuan on the maintenance of shipping lanes. It will also build 7 10,000-ton coastal berths along the Yangtze River and 10 berths of inland rivers with a capacity of over 1,000 tons to increase the port capacity to 2.1 billion tons so as to continuously enhance the connection between the section of the Grand Canal in southern Jiangsu and the key container ports along the Yangtze River, and promote the development of inland river container transportation.
