China's summer travel peak got underway on Monday as China's railway network has got ready to brace for thousands of millions of trips during the two-month period.
130 million railway trips are expected to be made during the 62-day summer travel peak in the Yangtze River Delta alone.
The railway authority has planned to add 46.5 sets of trains to increase the transport capacity.
Major destinations include Beijing, Wuhan, Xi’an, Lanzhou and Urumqi.
The waitlist function of ticket booking previously trialed on some rail routes will be available to all passenger trains in China, according to the railway authority.
The two railway stations in Nanjing will operate 498.5 sets of trains on a daily basis during the summer travel peak. 15.13 million railway trips are expected during the peak, a gain of 1.36 million year on year.
The highway transport will also brace for peak travel as college students will head for home reunions and migrant children will travel to big cities to stay with their parents.
Airports in Jiangsu are also witnessing a sudden surge in the number of passengers as the high school and college entrance exams ended in early June and mid-June.
Changzhou Airport handled a year-on-year increase of 43% in outbound passengers over the past week.
The summer travel peak will see the peak flow of return journeys at the end of August or early September.
